Penn Soil RC&D to Co-sponsor Advanced Grazing School in Forest County

Troy Bishopp, a.k.a. “The Grass Whisperer” along with Penn State and NRCS plant and soil scientists will be leading an advanced grazing school on August 9th, from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm, at Wilson Land and Cattle Company in Forest County Pa. The event is open to the public. The day will start at 6:30 with an optional day-break pasture walk at the farm located at 1532 Stitzinger Road, Tionesta, PA 16353.

The Wilson’s have found ways to lower inputs in their cattle, sheep, goat, hog and poultry operation. A tour of the farm’s use of multi-species cover crops, native warm season grasses, and high stocking density grazing to achieve significant savings will be given. Troy Bishopp will demonstrate using forage charts he has developed to ensure adequate forage through the grazing season and beyond. Dr. Sjoerd Duiker, from Penn State, will discuss recent research in combining multispecies cover crops, no-till and grazing for improved soil health. Rounding out the speaker list is Tricia McIntire, who works with both Clarion and Forest County Conservation Districts. She will highlight opportunities available to employ manure & nutrient management programs and explain how they can benefit you as a farmer.

The Advanced Grazing School is sponsored by the Penn State Extension, Capital RC&D, Penn Soil RC&D, Clarion & Forest County Conservation Districts, PA Grazing/Forage Lands Coalition, and the USDA NRCS. Registration is necessary for the lunch and support materials. To register call the Penn Soil RC&D office at 814-726-1441 by August 1st or register online at www.pennsoil.org/Shop .
