Grass Fed Grazing Field Day & Tour To Be Held Saturday, June 29, 2019

Anthony (A.J.) O’Neil will be hosting an educational field day and pasture tour on Saturday June 29, 2019. The tour will be held at his family’s farm located at 799 Route 322, Cranberry, PA 16319. The event will run from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. A.J. raises Red Devon grass fed beef on a rotational grazing system, using adaptive grazing management.

A.J. will discuss his grazing management and how he uses tall grass grazing, frequent moves with bat-latch gates, and high stock densities to produce meat to sell in the family meat shop/store. As well as selling meat at their nearby store, O’Neil’s Quality Foods makes value-added products such as flavored bacons, beef hot dogs, flavored patties, and sausage links.

Dave Hartman, Penn State Extension Livestock Team will be on hand to discuss forage analysis in grass-fed beef production and how it may be used to adjust the grazing sequence to maximize animal performance from pasture. Joel Hunter, Penn State Extension Agronomy specialist will discuss Allegheny Grass-Fed, a grass-fed cooperative meat marketing initiative.

Walt Robertson who owns Hilltop Seeds LLC, will be on hand to discuss some of the different species of warm season grass and other native plants that were seeded on the farm for added forage in warmer weather. Bob Van Kirk from 4 Seasons Farm in Tyrone, PA will be updating attendees on news from Red Devon USA. A special thanks for advertising the event goes to Red Devon USA.
