Penn Soil RC&D Council's First Annual Outdoor Safety Day




Penn Soil RC&D Council is hosting the first annual Outdoor Safety Day on Sat., Sept. 28, 2024 ( severe weather date Sat., Oct.5) at Kinzua Beach in Warren County from 10 am – 3 pm. This free event is open to the public and takes place on National Public Lands Day. Safety regarding many outdoor activities will be covered, there will be demos and hands on activities to participate in such as fishing, Leave No Trace awareness, fly-fishing and more! Smokey Bear will be in attendance as well. Come help him celebrate his 80th birthday!


We will be demoing canoe and kayak rescues and the Glade Swift Water Rescue team is slated to participate. There will be information about the Warren County Special Olympics program, Champion Swim lessons and the Rainbow Swim program offered at the Warren YMCA.


The Cornplanter Trout Unlimited chapter will have extra gear for you to try your hand at fly-fish casting and will actually be doing some fly-fishing. The Allegheny National Forest will be teaching regular fishing and will also have extra gear for you to fish with.



Following is a list of planned activities by the many participating agencies:


Kayak safety : Penn Soil RC&D : general kayaking and remote wilderness safety, fitting adults and children for PFD’s ( lifejackets), training how to use a throw bag, adaptive kayaking for individuals with disabilities, demoing kayak self-rescues, kayak twister, talking about Warren County Special Olympics program, Rainbow Swim and Champion Swim programs at the Warren YMCA for individuals with special needs.

Special Olympics, Champion Swim : Dawn & Kylie Turner - 10 am – noon

Glade Swift Water Rescue team : water rescue and safety

Geocaching : Penn Soil RC&D : talking about where to go geocaching and general safety, will have Penn Soil RC&D display.

Chapman State Park : hiking, camping and tick safety

Allegheny National Forest : Leave No Trace education, fishing workshops and safety, Smokey Bear attending to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Cornplanter Trout Unlimited : fly-fishing casting, safety and fly-fishing workshops

Warren County Sherrif’s office : car seat safety checks

East Brady USACE : motorboat and canoeing safety

Warren YMCA : Dani Mumford – swimming safety, fitting individuals for PFD’s, training on how to use a throw ring, racing activities for kids involving safety.

Clarendon VFD : fire safety

DCNR : wildfire safety and outdoor burning safety

Allegheny Outdoor Club : talking about the club’s outdoor activities.


The plan is for these events to rotate around to all 8 counties that Penn Soil RC&D Council serves. We hope you can attend! All of the agencies participating have been asked to be prepared to answer questions from attendees with disabilities pertaining to safe venues for them to go, if there is adaptive equipment available to meet their needs, etc.
